County to register vehicle title firms

Because of an increase in the number of title service companies for used car dealerships, Montgomery County will begin registering these businesses.
We've gotten so big, it is starting to increase tremendously," said J.R. Moore Jr., County Tax Assessor/Collector.
While large car dealerships have motor vehicle applications processed behind-the-scenes, title service companies were processed along with regular customers at various tax offices throughout the county.
Title search companies were limited to three transactions at a time, but with their growing number they cause delays for other customers. Moore estimates there are 100 such firms in the county.
Vehicle title companies now will be treated like dealerships. To participate, they will have fill out an application, identify their employees and pay fees.
The initial permit fee is $200, with $100 renewal cost annual. Each "runner," an employee who handles motor vehicle registrations, can be registered for $40, Moore said.
