Volunteering opportunities in The Woodlands

For more information on the following volunteer opportunities, please call Volunteer Houston at 713-965-0031, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional opportunities can be found at www.volunteerhouston.org.
IT'S ONLY A GAME, but bingo brings plenty of fun, stimulation, and good fellowship to senior citizens at a nursing facility in The Woodlands. You'll probably become the most popular person around by agreeing to serve as bingo caller or bingo assistant a couple or more times a month. Currently, staff are especially interested in volunteer assistance for games taking place on weekdays.
FUN AND FRESH AIR are in store for volunteers participating in a therapeutic horseback riding program for disabled children and adults. A program based at stables near The Woodlands uses volunteers to accompany these folks while they enjoy the unique thrill of a quiet horseback stroll in a protected environment. Riding sessions take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The minimum age for volunteers is 14.
CARE AND CONSOLATION are provided to terminally ill persons and their families through a hospice program serving Conroe, the Woodlands, and nearby areas. Working under the guidance of medical and social work staff, you can be a friend and resource to a terminally ill patient and his or her immediate family during the final stages of illness. Call now to register for an upcoming training series.
MAKE A PHONE CALL and brighten a lonely senior citizen's day. As a volunteer for a telephone reassurance program serving the Woodlands area, you can be assigned an elderly person to call at an agreed upon time during the daytime or evening. If your phone friend can't answer the call, the sponsoring agency will send someone to the home to determine if an emergency exists. Three to five minutes a day is all that's involved in this potentially life-saving activity.
