I'll be glued to the tube Sunday when the Canadian men's hockey team faces off against the U.S. for a preliminary round. It's only prelim, but it's the first game between these two teams, so I'll be watching closely.
If the finals come down to Canada vs. U.S. it's going to be like Super Bowl Sunday around my house. Par-tay time, food, excitement!
Meanwhile the Canadian men's team beat Norway 8-0 on Feb. 16. The Canadian women spanked Slovakia 18-0 on Feb. 13, and Switzerland 10-1 on Feb. 15.
The U.S. women's team kicked Russian Federation butt Feb. 16, winning 13-0, and China 12-1 on Feb. 14. The men had a tough game against Switzerland Feb. 16 but won 3-1.
When I was growing up in Hinton, a small town in Alberta, hockey was THE sport. I vividly remember the Bantam A and Bantam B hockey games at the rec center. The girls got to wear their boyfriend's leather hockey jackets.
One day, a new kid moved to town.
His town, smaller and further north, did not have hockey, so his family moved to our town so he could play.
Ultimately, this guy went on to the pros. Dean McAmmond has played with the Edmonton Oilers (famously known for Wayne Gretzky), the Calgary Flames and several American teams too. He is currently playing for the New Jersey Devils.
