The Woodlands athletes in action: Women's basketball

The following women's basketball players, all with The Woodlands high school ties, have scheduled action this week:

Megan Shafer, Rice University
Position: Forward
High school: College Park
This week: Sunday, Feb. 24 vs. Marshall University
About Shafer: The Woodlands native is a sophomore forward for Rice University. Shafer is a 2011 graduate of College Park High School in The Woodlands, where she was a McDonald's All-American nominee. A four-year letter winner and two-year starter for coach Michelle Richardson, she is the daughter of Eddie and Fran Shafer.

Anna Strickland, Harding University
Position: Forward
High school: The Woodlands
This week: Thursday, Feb. 21 vs. Southern Arkansas University
About Strickland: A freshman forward for Harding University, she is a 2012 graduate of The Woodlands High School. As a senior, Strickland was named most valuable defensive player in her district, three-time all-district and two-time academic all-district. In her junior year, Strickland averaged 11 points and nine rebounds. The Woodlands native is the daughter of Don and Gale Strickland.

Britni Martin, Sam Houston State University
High School: Conroe
This week: Wednesday, Feb. 20 vs. Stephen F. Austin State University
About Martin: She is a 2009 graduate of Conroe High School, where she was an all-greater Houston and all-district player on the basketball court for coach Deidre Hinze. As a senior (2008-2009), Martin averaged 17.1 points per game. The Conroe native was a McDonald's All-American candidate. She was also one of the top scorers in the 2008 Texas Girls Basketball Association All-Star Game. A three-time all-district selection, Martin was the district's newcomer of the year as a freshman (2005-2006). She was a four-time academic all-district honoree, also earning all-district honors on the soccer field. Martin was a member of the National Honor Society.
