Three local elementary schools awarded Teaching Gardens
Three area elementary schools have been awarded the Teaching Gardens Grant through the American Heart Association.
Creighton Elementary, Glen Loch Elementary and Sam Houston Elementary all received the grants and were recognized at the Heart Walk in Houston on Saturday, Nov. 3.
The Teaching Garden was started by using the American Heart Association science and nutrition guidelines in addition to information from gardening and education experts.
Students in pre-kindergarten through fourth grade are given an opportunity to learn how to plant seeds, nurture growing plants, harvest produce and learn about the value of good eating habits.
The goal of the program, which has several cross-curricular benefits for teaching in math, science, language arts and health, is to improve the health of the students while teaching them about gardening.
