High school football: McPherson, Black lead The Woodlands College Park to win over Huntsville

The Woodlands College Park High School's Connor McPherson ran for 217 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers to a 35-12 football triumph over the Huntsville High School Hornets Friday, Sept. 7.

With 2:21 gone in the second quarter and the game tied at 6-6, McPherson broke loose on an 84-yard run to give the Cavaliers (2-0) a 14-6 lead they never relinquished.

Fellow running back Nicholas Black put the Cavs on the board first with 1:06 to go in the opening quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run and finished the scoring with 4:05 to play with a one-yard run.

Huntsville (1-1) defender Kaleb Branch opened the game with a 96-yard interception of Brett Buckley for a touchdown before College Park scored 28 unanswered points to salt away the game. James Burns rushed eight times for 31 yards including a 5-yard touchdown run with 1:34 to go in the third quarter for the Hornets, who were penalized eight times for 68 yards and turned the ball over twice.

College Park will attempt to remain unbeaten when it travels to Katy Taylor High School's Rhodes Stadium at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. It then will host Friendswood Clear Brook High School on a short week at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. The Cavaliers will have their open date the weekend of Sept. 28, and return to action Friday, Oct. 5, to open District 14 play against Conroe Oak Ridge High School at 7:30 p.m.

Huntsville will begin District 18 play on the road at Montgomery High School Friday, Sept. 14, before hosting Bryan Rudder High School Friday, Sept. 21. The Hornets will take to the road again to visit Magnolia High School Friday, Sept. 28. All three contests begin at 7:30 p.m. and are in district.
