Woodlands, Conroe grads face off in Padres–Diamondbacks clash

The Woodlands High School graduate Paul Goldschmidt and Conroe High School graduate Andrew Cashner faced each other as San Diego beat Arizona, 9-5, on Tuesday, July 3.

Goldschmidt, who plays for Arizona, went 4-for-5 with a double in the loss.

On the season, Goldschmidt is batting, 303, with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs.

Goldschmidt is a 2006 graduate of The Woodlands High School. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 49th round (1,453rd overall) of the 2006 Major League Baseball draft, but he did not sign. Goldschmidt accepted a baseball scholarship at Texas State and played three seasons (2007-09) for the Bobcats, appearing in 151 career games.

Goldschmidt was drafted in the eighth round (246th overall) of the 2009 MLB draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. In 2010, his first full professional season, he was named MVP of the California League (advanced class A) and the Diamondbacks Minor League Player of the Year after batting .314 with 42 doubles, three triples, 35 home runs and 108 RBIs for Vasalia. Goldschmidt was born Sept. 10, 1987, in Wilmington, Del.

Cashner pitched two innings, striking out two and givig up one hit. On the season, Cashner has a record of 3-3, with an ERA of 3.44 with San Diego.

A 2005 graduate of Conroe High School, Cashner pitched at Angelina College and Texas Christian University. Cashner was taken by the Cubs in the 29th round (877th overall) of the 2007 draft. He did not sign and transferred to TCU, where as a junior in 2008 he went 9-4 with nine saves and a 2.32 ERA in 30 appearances to earn Mountain West Conference all-star and second-team college all-American honors.

He made his major league debut with the Cubs on May 31, 2010. Cashner was born Sept. 11, 1986, in Montgomery.
