COME ALONG FOR THE RIDE as a volunteer with a program that provides therapeutic horseback riding opportunities for youngsters with disabilities. Serving as a "side walker", you'll accompany these kids while they enjoy the special thrill of a horseback stroll in a protected environment under the careful guidance of physical therapists. Riding sessions take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings at stables in Spring and Hockley.
A WOMEN'S CENTER in the Woodlands is seeking volunteers to assist victims of family violence and sexual assault. Some current areas of need include shelter volunteers, accompaniment advocates for victims of violence, and persons to staff the center's emergency hotline. Daytime, evening, and weekend assignments are available. Comprehensive training is provided.
LIVING INDEPENDENTLY goes a little more smoothly for elderly shut-ins in Montgomery County thanks to volunteers with a church-backed social service agency in The Woodlands. As needed, these volunteers take the seniors to medical appointments and grocery stores. If you have a good driving record, consider using your car or van to help one or more of these folks run essential errands. Volunteers are especially needed to help out on occasional weekdays.
SPANISH-SPEAKING VOLUNTEERS are wanted during the coming tax season as interpreters in a program that helps low-income persons complete their federal income tax returns. This assignment doesn't require any tax expertise, just good interpersonal skills, fluency in English and Spanish, and willingness to assist volunteer tax-form preparers in communicating with the persons served at cooperating libraries and community centers.
