Grote is a 2007 graduate of The Woodlands High School and an eighth-round selection (274th overall) of the New York Yankees in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. In his first four professional seasons (2007 to 2010) in the Yankees' system, Grote batted .235 with nine home runs and 71 RBIs in 199 games. He spent the bulk of his time at Charleston of the South Atlantic League (single-A) before receiving a promotion of double-A Trenton (Eastern League) at the end of 2010.
