This week’s “Weekend in the Woods” is chock full of ideas on how to kick off the first days of Spring Break, where to start your St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, and what to do outdoors to usher in the beautiful spring weather and longer hours, courtesy of Daylight Saving Time:
Friday, March 12:
Catch our local athletes competing for the district title as The Woodlands High School Softball Team takes on Conroe High School at 6 p.m., at TWHS Gymnasium, Courts, and Track. For more information, visit www.twhsfastpitch.com.
Parents can enjoy a night out on the town, courtesy of Legends Sports Complex, who will host their “Parents Night Out”, from 5 to 11 p.m. Kids age 6 months to 13 years will have a blast playing games on the indoor turf field, climbing the inflatable rock wall, and racing through the obstacle course while Mom and Dad revel in some quality down time. The fee for Legend’s members is $25 for the first child, and $10 for each additional child. Non-members fee is $30 for one, and $15 each additional. Registration is required. Contact Adrien at 281-298-5700 for more information.
Saturday, March 13:
Town Green Park is apparently the spot where the rainbow ends, as that is where the Leprechauns have hidden their pots o’ gold. Hunt the little green man and win a prize at the Leprechaun Hunt, from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Fee is $10 per child, ages 5 to 8, and registration is required. Call Parks and Recreation at 281-210-3950 for more information.
After hunting Leprechauns, hop on over to The Woodlands Mall for the first official sighting of our next holiday icon, the Easter Bunny. Everyone’s favorite cottontail cutie will be appearing in the Future Court near JC Penney’s from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, to pose for photos with young and old. For more information, visit www.thewoodlandsmall.com.
Also on Saturday, Legends Sports Complex will hold its Summer Camp Open House, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Door prizes, inflatables, and information on a variety of camps will be part of the festivities. For details, visit www.thelegendssportscomplex.com.
After a fun day soaking up the sun, wind down for a Family Night Hike at the George Mitchell Preserve at Rob Fleming Park, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wear your hiking shoes and bring your flashlight as you’re led through the trails of the Preserve, culminating with s’mores at the end of your hike. Fee for a family of four is $20, and $5 for each additional family member. Call The Woodlands Recreation Center at 281-210-3950 for more information or to register.
Sunday, March 14:
Enjoy the beautiful outdoor scenery provided by our hometown by rowing a kayak and taking a tour of Lake Woodlands. From 10 a.m. to noon, the Riva Row Boat House offers a two-hour tour of the lake via kayak. Snacks, drinks, and kayaks are included in the $45 fee. Contact the Riva Row Boat House for more details, 281-210-3965.
Bald is beautiful at the St. Baldrick’s Day charity event at The Goose’s Acre Bistro & Irish Pub. Join nearly 30 men and women who have signed up to shave their heads to raise funds for children’s cancer research. The event kicks off with a Pantene-sponsored “Locks of Love”-type event at 2 p.m., followed by head-shaving from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., with barbering services courtesy of Up Town Salons. Along with the lopping off of locks, the event will feature guest speakers and items like shirts, sunglasses, hats and wristbands for sale to raise additional funds. For details, contact Johnny Hennigan at 832-563-8772 or e-mail btprodinc@aol.com.
Another opportunity for charitable giving will take place at the “From Our ‘Country’ to Yours” benefit for Haiti at Dosey Doe Coffee House, from 4 to 9 p.m. The evening will feature live music from rising Dallas, Houston, and Woodlands area country music stars. Voluntary donations will be accepted at the door and will go to the American Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services, and United Methodist Relief Fund. Tables may be reserved online for a $10 donation at www.doseydoe.com, or by calling 281-367-3774.
