    Volunteering options in The Woodlands

For more information on the following volunteer opportunities, please call Volunteer Houston at 713-965-0031, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Additional opportunities can be found at www.volunteerhouston.org.

DO YOUR OWN THING by launching a personal food drive on behalf of a faith-based social service agency in The Woodlands serving the needy. Supplies in the agency’s food pantry have been stressed by the current economic climate, so now is an excellent time to rally your family, friends, congregation, club, or place of business to help keep the shelves adequately stocked. You can set your own goals and schedule for this worthwhile volunteer project.

CREATE BLANKETS for infants and small children. An all-volunteer organization is looking for persons willing to make blankets for seriously ill or traumatized youngsters, including pediatric cancer patients. The blankets may be sewn, woven, crocheted, knitted, or quilted, and size doesn't matter. You can do the work at home and on your own schedule, and the amount you make is wholly up to you.

THE SOUND OF YOUR VOICE will really be appreciated when you read aloud to patients at a group residence in The Woodlands for persons with Alzheimer’s disease. If you have a clear speaking voice, plan on coming by on weekdays or weekends to stimulate patients' minds and keep their spirits bright. Material read can include inspirational passages, poems, or pieces chosen for entertainment value. Training on working with Alzheimer's patients will be provided.

BRIGHTEN THE DAY for a home-bound blind or severely visually impaired person. By becoming a "friendly visitor" for a United Way agency, you can help one of these people continue to live with independence and dignity. You'll be paired with someone whom you’ll help with everyday matters such as grocery shopping and reading mail. The time you contribute would be at the mutual convenience of your new friend and yourself.
