Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office are hunting for more suspects in a copper theft case after a suspect was arrested early Monday morning.
Just after midnight Monday, patrol deputy Nick Zavorski saw cut telephone cable hanging from poles onto the ground near FM 149 and Adams Lane in western Montgomery County, according to a sheriff's office release.
The deputy spotted several people hiding in the woods near where the wiring had been pulled down and the deputy gave chase and found one person hiding in the woods who surrendered peacefully when discovered. Magnolia resident, Byron Wayne Powell, 26, was arrested and charged with theft of copper, which is a state jail felony.
Various cutting tools were found in the area.
The sheriff’s office is conducting a follow-up investigation to determine if other suspects can be identified.
