When the weather takes a hike, get out the bike. Spring is approaching and hopefully with it, warmer weather. Coupled with more hours of daylight as Daylight Savings Time will spring forward on March 14th, and an extensive trail system, The Woodlands provides the perfect setting for bicycling. What The Woodlands doesn’t have is the elite designation of being a Bicycle Friendly Community, a program sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. But on Monday, March 8 at 7pm, two local residents and avid bicyclists will speak about recent research on bicycling and what it takes to move up from a good bicycle community to a great one.
Ron Keichline and David Hitchcock will be speaking at the Woodlands South Regional Library at 2101 Lake Robbins Drive (next to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion), on this topic and will share their experiences and tips on traveling safely by bicycle. Keichline is an environmental scientist with extensive bicycling experience: cross-country bicycle touring, mountain biking, family trips by bike, and velodrome racing. Hitchcock is an urban transportation planner who began biking “full time” four years ago and is a bicycle commuter.
The presentation titled Transitioning The Woodlands to a Bicycle-friendly Community is sponsored by The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N. (The Woodlands Grass Roots Environmental Education Network) which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year.
