Resident wins naming rights to book character

This release comes from Good Books in the Woods:

At 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10th, at Good Books in the Woods, area novelist Colleen Thompson will present a signed copy of her latest romantic thriller, Touch of Evil, to area resident Debbie Brown, who won the naming rights to one of the book’s characters in an auction benefitting The 100 Club of Houston. An autographing will follow and is open to the public.
In September 2008, Thompson was beginning what would become her 16th published novel when Mary J. Jones of the Windsor Lakes community in Conroe asked her to serve as emcee for a talent show and silent auction to raise funds for The 100 Club, which benefits the families of police and fire fighters killed in the line of duty.
“I didn’t have to think twice,” Thompson recalls. “As the wife of a Houston fire fighter, I’ve seen The 100 Club help many families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for public safety.” In addition to emceeing the event, she donated an autographed set of her books to be auctioned, along with the rights to choose the name of one of the characters in the novel she was writing.
But Debbie Brown, the winner of the character naming auction, never placed a bid. Instead, she was surprised by her husband, Marvin Brown, who won the auction to honor Debbie, an avid reader of mystery novels. In March 2010, the Browns received a message from the author telling them that Touch of Evil, a Lovespell Romantic Suspense, had finally arrived in stores and Thompson would like to present them with an autographed first edition at a signing in The Woodlands.
Though Brown has no idea of the exact role the character named for her will play in the mystery, Thompson offered her and her husband an important choice. “Would you rather be remembered as a suspect or a victim?”
