    District

    Conroe ISD art students did extremely well at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo with a record number of students winning special awards. Conroe ISD was also recognized with the third consecutive SUPER SHOW AWARD which is based on quality of student art work, presentation of the district level show and adherence to the rules and regulations set by the School Arts Committee. The following awards were given: Best of Show High School Trophy- Kinsey Simmons (James Kitchen - TWHS), Best of Show Junior High Trophy - Abdullah Khan (Laurie Adams - McCullough) - Glassell School of Art Scholarship Winner, Best of Show Elementary Trophy - Rachel Willeford (Janet Melton - Collins Intermediate) - Glassell School of Art Scholarship Winner, Gold Medal Award High School - Stephanie Eisner (James Kitchen – The Woodlands High) - Western Art Academy in Kerrville Scholarship Winner, Gold Medal Award Junior High - Alyssa Drew (Laurie Adams - McCullough) - Glassell School of Art Scholarship Winner, Gold Medal Award -Ashley Kim (Betty Arnold - College Park High), Gold Medal Award Elementary - Madeline McCollum (Tricia Matthews - Giesinger Elementary) - Glassell School of Art Scholarship Winner, and Special Merit Award - Amanda Heineman (James Kitchen – The Woodlands High). The Reserve Class Champion in Monochromatic drawing was earned by Amanda Heineman whose piece will go to auction.

    Ambassadors Honored by Board of Trustees

    The Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees honored several individuals with the Ambassador Award when Board Member Gerald Irons and Dr. Don Stockton, Superintendent visited Oak Ridge High School, Oak Ridge High School -9th Grade Campus, Oak Ridge Elementary, Houser Elementary, Vogel Intermediate, and Lamar Elementary School. The honor is bestowed on an educator, a student, and a paraprofessional at each campus during each school year.

    The Board of Trustees began the Ambassador Award three years ago to recognize individuals for their positive contributions to campus life and campus climate. Each campus will be visited by a member from the Board who will surprise the award recipients while they are performing their duties as either a student or employee.

    Students honored were: Mario Torres, Oak Ridge High; Germod Williams, Oak Ridge High-9th Grade Campus; Tyler Ray, Oak Ridge Elementary; Victoria Sunderman, Houser Elementary; Connor Cox, Vogel Intermediate; and Taylor Halsey, Lamar Elementary.

    Paraprofessionals honored were: Jackeline Rivera Flores, Oak Ridge High; Sally Staton, Oak Ridge High-9th Grade Campus; Larry Briskey, Oak Ridge Elementary; Dorothy Nowlin, Houser Elementary; Mitch Comeaux, Vogel Intermediate; and Vicky Gourley, Lamar Elementary.
    Educators honored were: Tim Algeo, Oak Ridge High; Madeleine Floyd, Oak Ridge High-9th Grade Campus; Connie Schrynemeeckers, Oak Ridge Elementary; Linda Reed, Houser Elementary; Eric Bolton, Vogel Intermediate; and Barbara Muggley, Lamar Elementary.

    Birnham Woods Elementary
    Spring picture day is on March 23. Students will take individual and class pictures.

    Students and staff will wear 1950’s style clothing on March 24 to begin the 50 day countdown until the last day of school.

    Second grade students are performing “Education Rocks” on Thursday, March 25 at 6:30 p.m. The program has a medley of songs about school and what students learn about at school.

    Buckalew Elementary
    Kindergartners will enjoy an egg hunt on April 1.

    Fourth graders are looking forward to field trips to Huntsville on April 1 and 6.

    The Spring Choir Concert will be April 8 at 7 p.m.

    Bush Elementary
    The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Spring Carnival/Auction-Saturday will be held April 17 from 3-7 p.m. The school is asking for help to make confetti eggs. Follow these directions: crack the narrow end of an egg and peel back a quarter-sized hole. Pour out the egg. Rinse the shell and store it in the carton. If rinsed, the eggs will not smell. Please send as many as possible for the event.

    College Park HS
    Students from the Literary Club, ages 16 and up, worked on a new house that is under construction by Habitat for Humanity. According to club sponsor and College Park Librarian Mrs. Pam Cooper, the students enjoyed the experience and plan to participate again next year.

    Cox Intermediate
    The faculty and staff would like to congratulate the participants of the Jr. Regional Science Bowl held at Texas A&M University in College Station. All three sixth grade teams did very well in competition against seventh and eighth graders. Coaches Missy Flanagan, Nadine Smith and Cerise Eaves would like thank all the parents of students for providing them with transportation to the University. Participants included, Ishta Chuckaree, Turner Lime, Anna Cunningham, Samantha Alleman, Dominic Sere, Nathaniel Jacobs, Michael Harros, Oliver Abdulrahim, Taylor Butler, Elias Zimmerman, Yashi Prasad, Daniel Lazcano, Savannah Byrd, John Beaubouef, and Peyton Schard.

    Creighton Elementary
    Recently the kindergarten students wore cowboy hats and western attire and studied the culture and customs of the Old West. Dubbed “Rodeo Day,” the event is tied to a study unit based on Texas and cowboys, or vaqueros, which focuses on the cultural history of Texas and the contributions of these people and their jobs to our state & country’s historical past.

    The school will celebrate Career Day March 26. Doctors, engineers, computer programmers, fashion designers, chemists and other professionals will visit the campus and talk to students. Career Day is an educational outreach program to present information to help students make informed decisions about his/her future.

    David Elementary
    The fourth grade Destination Imagination (DI) Team, "The Order of the Bot Brains," placed first in the regional competition and is now eligible to compete at the state level in Carrollton, Texas on April 16-17. The student participants include: Max Bowman, Emily Faries, Alex Larramendi, Eric Larramendi, Heather Noonan and Anthony Santamaria.

    Galatas Elementary
    After a month of research into biographies, third graders will transform into scientists, Nobel Prize winners, and heroes during the annual Glimpses of Greatness on March 24.

    The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) invites all parents to eat at the Chili’s restaurant at Indian Springs the evening of March 30. Chili’s will donate a portion of the proceeds from that night to the PTO.

    Singer and songwriter Brian Burns will bring history to life as he performs “Once Upon a Time in Texas” to the fourth grade class on March 26.

    Grangerland Intermediate
    Student kicked off the 2010 racing season by leading the National Anthem during the “Night at the Races” at 105 Speedway in Cleveland. Over 600 parents, teachers and students attended the event to hear the student sing and then watch the races.

    Hailey Elementary
    During March, students are collecting canned food to benefit the Interfaith Food Pantry. The students have set a goal to raise 1,000 pounds of nonperishable food. On March 31, the food donations will be weighed to see if the goal was reached. The students are very excited to share with others in the community.

    Fourth grade teacher Amanda Barton recruited forty fourth grade students to form the Hailey Elementary Green Team. Mrs. Barton and the students are working on the beautification of the school’s outside cottages and learning about gardening and the environment.

    Houser Elementary
    The Hot Houser Hawk Luncheon will be held on March 25 to honor students who are doing an outstanding job.
    Second graders will present a music program on March 25 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

    Family Math Night is March 30, at 6 p.m.

    Milam Elementary
    Third and fourth grade students will visit the Conroe YMCA on Wednesday, March 24 during their Specials time, to participate in activities for Destination YMCA, a motivational program to encourage students to use TAKS strategies in weekly assessments.

    Thursday, March 25, spring photos will be taken.

    Oak Ridge Elementary
    Kindergarten Round Up for incoming kindergartners will be the week of April 12-16. Please bring a valid picture identification, birth certificate, shot records, social security card and proof of residence (such as light, gas or water bill). No appointment necessary for registration. The first 50 parents that register for the upcoming school year, 2010-2011, will receive a free kindergarten workbook and CD.
